Furniture

Project Duration:
2018 – today

My home is an important place of retreat for me, a sanctuary where I find peace and comfort. Therefore, it is crucial that it is cozy and well-designed, which has motivated me to design and build my own furniture and lamps. From 2018 to 2023, I had the pleasure of co-living with Sam Bernet, and together we created many unique pieces. I enjoy working with wood and steel, and sometimes even concrete, to create unique and functional designs.

Nightstand

August 2020

I was fascinated by the structure of plywood, particularly the way the layers of wood veneer create an appealing visual effect. This inspired me to find a way to maximize the visibility of these layers in my nightstand design. I achieved this by creating a grid of plywood bars, showcasing the layered structure on the outside. The wood bars are held together with threaded rods at the edges. To enhance the finish, I welded a steel frame for the front and back, where the gray mill scale provides a beautiful contrast to the oiled plywood surface.

Concrete Lights

September 2020

Sam and I wanted to have better lighting for our kitchen, and we came up with the idea of making concrete lampshades for spotlights. We designed the mold using McDonald’s cups and a piece of PVC pipe. The cup was easy to remove after the concrete cured, but the PVC pipe was difficult to extract because it didn’t have a draft angle. For the light source, we used GU5.3 12V spotlights. The lights are suspended directly from the ceiling using the power cables, making them easy to install and offering a simple, elegant design.

Steel band shelf

February 2019

With the help of my brother and architect Fabian, I designed the steel band shelf. The goal was to create an affordable shelf that could adapt to my changing needs. We used galvanized fixing bands, typically used for mounting electrical and sanitary pipes, to suspend the wood boards. The perforated metal strips are mounted to the top of the wall at regular intervals, making it easy to rearrange the shelves. The open nature of the shelf gives the room an airy feeling.

Electronics lab

August 2020 – March 2023

In my apartment, I didn’t have space for a stationary electronics bench. Inspired by a tweet reply to Adam Savage, I decided to build a portable and compact storage system for my electronic tools. The drawers are standardized euro containers of utz, providing ample storage space for tools. On the right side of the drawer unit, there are drawers specifically for storing electronic components. The entire unit is on wheels, allowing it to be easily placed next to a table. When positioned this way, the working surface of the cart aligns with the table height, extending the workspace.

Sideboard

February 2019

Sam and I generally liked the IKEA PS sideboard, but it felt too utilitarian and cheap. To upgrade the sideboard, we added a wooden top panel, slightly suspended, to give a lighter feeling. For the door handle, we opted for custom-made, real leather tabs. These enhancements transformed the sideboard into a more refined and elegant piece.
